On the note of failing

Hi guys.

Do I start most posts like that?

Aw, whatever. I have been trying to get a vlog up for you guys practically all week. It is a long story but part of it has to do with slow internet connection (can you hear the skipping record playing the sad song of life?).

abandoned record player and broken record but the melody plays on.

I am going to get this video up before the end of the month! I will! So I'm really not here to say much, except that I have not forgotten you. Promises.

Other than that, summer has been taking its lazy toll and I've gotten some writing done and. . . that's about it.

The other day my little sister was reading a book (she's recently found that books are the best thing in life. *sniffs* I'm so proud of her). And- well, I made myself a nuisance while she was reading. Basically, I goofed around pretending like I was a wounded toddler. Heh, yeah. Maturity is my middle name. *cough*

.
source

But everybody else bothers me when I read. It was only fair that I get the chance to do the some to a fellow bookworm. She is only a beginner bookworm after all. I'm testing her endurance. She must be properly initiated, you know.

I blamed it on the fact that I had a can of Mountain Dew and maybe some candy that day.

This is hilarious.
source

But in truth, it's really because college is out for the summer. So now the only pressing "in the world of people" thing that I have to do is go to work. Therefore I see less people and have less social interaction in a day/week meaning I have more energy left over for my family.

Which is awesome!

Except I don't know what to do with that energy, and it ends up being used on irritating my sister while she reads.

source

I don't know what to do with myself. I can't sit still. Sometimes I actually wish I had friends who lived in town so I'd have someone to have snow cones with, go to the movies, or ride roller coasters. Pfft, at this rate I might even walk around the grocery store at this. (Honestly, people, there's not much to do in this town. Social evenings consist of going to the movies or going to Wal-Mart, and I have never been much for the latter).

Where did all this energy come from? I can't even WRITE articulately. That's bad.

I can only read one chapter in my book at a time. And it's a FANTASTIC book.

Sometimes I can't sleep because my muscles are restless and still have energy to spend. There is no exaggeration here. During the day, I try to exercise just so I can sleep at night. Perhaps it would help if I went barrel riding.

I mean. . . uh, I'm going to have another soda and see what book my sister is reading.

Anyhow, boring life updates. Sorry.

Oh, but if you want to join the Summer Writing Camp link up, it is here. Also I'm leaving it open until the Friday of next week. Which is a possible bad-good idea (because I'm indecisive and cynically optimistic like that).

And I feel very proud of myself because I remembered to source all the pics properly. (Yes, 'source' is now a verb.)

Summer Writing Camp #1

Hi guys! So I thought we'd do a link up for the summer. Just a writing prompt thing to keep writing going throughout the summer. For the fun of it. Even if you don't consider yourself a writer but want to participate, go for it!

Okay, here's the thing. I've wrestled with the link tool for an infuriating amount of time. Weeks! I just want to throw the computer out the window. But then I'd have a broken window and where would I be? My mother would be so upset, and-

Right, back to the link up. So here's what we're going to do. Instead of signing the link and all that normal link up jazz. Leave the link/html address to your post in the comments section. Then next week when I post the link, I'll also post a link to each of your posts.

I'm sorry. I know that's a ton of work. But hopefully next week, I can get the real, actual link up tool in the post.

Here's your prompt for the week:

The Storm Clouds

Sorry I haven't been around much. I'm trying to keep up, but. . . it's been a socially busy weekend. So last night I locked myself away in my room and shamelessly watched about six or seven episodes of The Mentalist.

Today I ran across an old poem and decided it could use some slight revising. And a title.

Actually I don't like the title I gave it. But I couldn't think of anything else.

The Storm Clouds

I’m waiting

Thunder rumbles rumor overhead
The air, hot and weary
The sky, gray and wandering
It’s melancholy, like me

I’m waiting

The rumbles pass and don’t return
Oh, please don’t shudder over some other land
Darken the sky
Let it weigh heavy until-

I’m waiting

For the rain to come pouring down
To satisfy this thirsty ground
To drench me deep from head to toe
And breathe life into the tired air

I’m waiting

Favorite Screen Characters Tag aka The Explosion of GIFs

So I was informally tagged by Skye @ Ink Castles. Thanks, Skye!

You list ten of your favorite screen characters and tag ten bloggers.

I had a hard time narrowing them down, but I decided to pick a few. . . under appreciated characters? Though there are a few very popular ones in there too.

1. Loki

I know. Maybe it's cliched. Who doesn't like Loki?

This is unashamedly too funny XD

He's just misunderstood. . . and adopted. I think one of the reasons he uses his tricks to manipulate and injuriously deceive  is because for his whole life he himself has been used, lied to, manipulated, and deceived. He was raised by his people's enemy to think that his people were the enemy. Who wouldn't be messed up after that?

Besides he's the god of mischief, so obviously he's going to cause some havoc.

Loki is cunning and smart. He has a dramatic flair and always seem to view himself as larger than life. He's got a touch of charming arrogance that can grow to be impossible at times. I could see Loki narrating his life in his head. (Wait, doesn't everyone do that?)

Okay, this might sound lame. But people like the underdog.  I think that's the biggest factor in why people like Loki. He's always on the sidelines trying to find a world of his own to rule while the main plot of the story doesn't actually involve him. He tries to detract to plot away to serve his purposes, but it doesn't work. He's a renegade out for himself, yet he never seems to win.

 :'(

In Thor, it was about Thor becoming worthy and finding out was really important. He would have went to Isengard (sorry if the spelling's wrong) without Loki's prodding. Odin would've banished Thor without Loki. Loki was just a tool. He caused extra mischief on the side that did, yes, add to the plot and was necessary. But the real villain in the movie was actually Thor. It was Thor against Thor.

*cough* And Thor won.

In the Avengers, Loki was around, but he wasn't the one really threatening Earth. It seemed that way at first and he certainly liked it looking that way. But again he was just a tool for the real enemy. He aspires for his own destiny of greatness and he made some of his own waves. But once more Loki was used, manipulated, and thrown to the side.

This Scene In Avengers Will Never Stop Being Funny

In Thor: The Dark World, Loki was a distraction. He had motives and plans of his own, but it didn't fit into the main plot of the movie. As a character, he was a great asset to the plot. He caused a lot of tension and created a nice subplot. But Loki had plans of his own that had nothing to do with the main plot. (I still want to know how he got on the throne and how Thor's going to get him off. I mean, he still hasn't figured out it's Loki? Thor, do you not know the difference between your father and your brother?) I think Loki is often not included in the main plot because usually the main plot is about someone taking over the world/universe. But that someone also ends not being Loki, that someone ends up being a bigger threat than Loki.

.

Besides Loki does what he wants.

That's another reason I like Loki. It reminds me that all the side characters and villains  have their own lives. They have goals too. They believe that this is their story.

2. Sherlock

You might have picked up that I rather like the Cumberbatch Sherlock. (And if you like another Sherlock, then I salute you. Bashing doesn't happen on this blog.)

I like that he really doesn't get humans. He doesn't understand feelings. In The Last Vow, you realize that Sherlock has a lot of vulnerable points. Why? Because this arrogant, cocky, I-am-the-smartest-person-in-the-room guy actually cares. He cares so much about a lot of things and people. He doesn't act like it though. But that's because he doesn't know he cares.

 .

He doesn't understand 'sentiment.' His older brother taught him that sentiment gets in the way of things. Sherlock wants to make his older brother proud so he suppressed emotions. Yes I'm afraid we have Mycroft to blame, eh, mostly. Sherlock doesn't even know he has feelings. And when he does begin to realize it, he doesn't know what to do with it.

It's amusing, really.

Also I love the character development. In the beginning of the series, there are few people who can stand Sherlock. He's a nasty person.

“Everybody shut up!”-Sherlock | The Best Quotes From BBC's "Sherlock"

But as the series goes on, Sherlock realizes that maybe he needs people. Sure, they're just stray little factors and he can't understand where they fit into the equation of life. But those stray factors are necessary all the same.

“Oh. Which one?”-Sherlock | Community Post: The Best Quotes From BBC's "Sherlock"

And then he's been away and maybe he realizes that he actually might have- don't tell anyone- missed these stray factors. Maybe he's gotten a little- *gasp*- attached. What if Mycroft didn't have it righ?. Caring doesn't seem all that bad. It might not be spectacular if, say, an evil, black-mailing, sadistic mastermind decided to use it against you and everyone you maybe care about. But what is life and it's factors if you don't care a little? Besides those stray factors, maybe they aren't really strays if he's gotten attached to them? That makes sense, right?

This totally made my day :)

Maybe Mycroft was wrong, and maybe Mycroft is kind of lonely. . . Maybe he needs some little misfit, stray factors of his own (Mycroft does have one actually: his name is Sherlock).

I could say more about Sherlock, but we've got eight more characters to go.

If you read to the end of this post, I'll reward you with virtual dessert.

3. Patrick Jane

I don't know if you've ever heard of or seen The Mentalist. It was a TV series. And I love the main character. I like Lisbon a lot too. But I'll try to stay focused here.

Patrick Jane is. . . well, the Mentalist. He's charming and hilarious. He's his own worst enemy. He got his family killed by smart mouthing about a serial killer. So he wants revenge on Red John (eh, that's the serial killer).

To be honest sometimes I don't understand why I like Jane. He can be very manipulative. And I can't stand manipulate people (Nick Fury, grr. . . Everybody likes him, but I just can't). Jane does try to make it up to his friends in some way or another. But really, he can be very incorrigible.

 .

He's also very unconventional. It's a detective show and he doesn't believe in the "system." He doesn't always go about things legally. Jane hates it when the victims end up facing more consequences than the actually murderer. When someone does something wrong for the right reason or because they were pushed by circumstances, he sticks up for them. It's not completely right, but it's not completely wrong either. He's not afraid to be controversial.

 That's all folks

4. Stitch

I shall wander to the realm of animation. Stitch really is a lost puppy as Lilo proposes. His character development is the best. He's a creature made for evil who longs to be good. How can a story get any better?

.

Also, he's a misfit lost in the galaxy and he eventually finds a misfit family to fit into. Don't we all feel that way at some time?

And you have to love how Lilo and he are like big sister/little brother.

.

Besides he's cute and fluffy. Who could resist loving him?

5. Megamind

Megamind from "Megamind" - he's got presentation. :)

I don't know. Maybe it goes back to the whole Loki concept. Megamind is an underdog with visions of grandeur.

Megamind demotivational by Kytan223.deviantart.com on @deviantART
See? They both have the presentation thing down.

And you know something? He never gives up. Not once does Megamind win. But not once does he give up either. He's optimism is unbeatable. The word 'surrender' doesn't even cross his mind, if he even knows what it means. He just loves the game of life and living.

He's also not very bad for a bad guy.

6. Edith

She is now my new favorite character from this movie. So Awesome!! (they have her in a nina costume!!!)

Despicable Me has explored Margo's character. Everybody loves Agnes. But Edith? We hear nothing about her. Why?

I don't know. Maybe I just have an underdog complex. Or maybe I'm just really, really curious. I want to know more about Edith.

Just look at her. She always dresses in pink and creeps around with a ninja sword. She's the perfect strong female character. The princess assassin! She's just enough girly, and just enough, uh, different.

Edith Gru - Despicable Me Wiki

So why do we never hear much about her? I suspect it's because she's always slinking away to play sword fight. She goes off into her imaginary world and makes up adventures of her own. And what about her pink obsession? Does she get upset if she can't wear her hat? Also, she's totally protective of her sisters. What do you think she carries that sword for? Who knows when some purple monster will break through the ceiling! With all that imagining, I wouldn't be surprised if Edith grew up to become a writer.

And that is my Edith theory.

Thank you. *bows*

7. Peter Parker

I've probably talked about him before. I probably shouldn't go on-

But whatever.

.

Peter Parker just doesn't give up, okay? It seems I like characters who persevere and never lose hope.

As a writer you're told to think of the worst thing that could happen to your character and then write it. I think Stan Lee took that a little too seriously when he wrote Spider-Man's comics. Because Pete never gets a break. But he keeps on keeping on. And he doesn't let it change him. He still makes his goofy jokes. He's still sincere. He still tries to empathize with the "bad guy."

That's another reason I like Parker. He doesn't see the villain as the embodiment of evil. He sees the villain as another human being who's been hurt, just like everybody in the world. And I think sometimes he wants to help the villains as well as the victims. Because they're people too. . . mutated maybe. But, yeah, people too.

Peter makes a lot mistakes along the way. He has his dark days. But he always comes back around.

 His expressions are the best

He's just trying to be the best good person he can be.

And, in the superhero world, Spider-Man's kind of an underdog too.

Parker's the best, but gets the most tragedy

8. Toothless

Toothless doesn't talk. But he has both dog- and cat-like tendencies, therefore he is the perfect animal friend. He's fiercely loyal. He's curious and adorable. And he's a best friend.

Fanart by apfelgriebs. Hiccup and Toothless from How to Train your Dragon 2.

9. Vanellope

How can you not like Vanelope?

2/2
In light of that comment, maybe I relate to her also. . .

She thinks outside the box. No matter how much people put her down, she still believes in herself. She's also very good with insulting names.

SHES ADORIBLE!!

She knows her life sucks, but she tries to make the most of it.

 Pixlexia sucks! (Wreck It Ralph)

Also her and Ralph's friendship is pretty awesome. So she's another underdog. . .

 Not helping

10. Thranduil

By the way, he's not an underdog.

 Thranduil

Just thought I'd state that.

At first, I didn't like Thranduil. He's obviously selfish. At first, he just seems like he's just out for himself. He doesn't want to get involved and help others out. He thinks he can just hide away while everyone else suffers. Then when it all blows over he can rise back up, unscathed.

I didn't like him.

But in the Battle of the Five Armies, he walks through a scene full of dead elves. His elves. His people. And he's devastated. He calls back his army to retreat. I realized that it's not that he doesn't want to help or that he's a coward. He strives to protect his people. He cares the most of his people and their safety. If he can avoid war, he will. (Okay, unless diamonds are in the question. . .)

Thranduil in The Battle of the Five Armies

With the failure that he experienced in the battle that left his wife dead, he's become over cautious. Also when he confides in Tauriel about love, I realized just how hard his wife's death hit him. That was the reason why he acts so cold toward everyone. He was afraid to let anyone that close again. But he did advise Tauriel against his own path, to be unafraid of love.

"I never forget you" ~ this is one of the most beautiful Thranduil fanart I've seen, props for LadyMintLeaf!

Anyhow, Thranduil became more human to me (you know, even though he's an elf). I understood him better. And even though I didn't completely agree with his course of actions, I didn't blame him, and I respected him.

And he's an awesome swordsman.

It's a Cover Reveal!

I had no idea what to title this post. . .

Guess what, you guys?! I took my last final today! *cue ecstatic screaming*

I love Summer... I never want it to end!!!!

So my friend, Jack, (she's awesome, in case you wondered) has a book coming out. It's a Beauty and the Beast retelling. It's called Find the Magic. Here's the blurb:

Belle's father has always taught her to see the magic in the world around her, but when war comes it suddenly becomes harder to find. During the bombings of London, Belle is sent to live with Adam Prince, a bitter gentleman who has lost much and has therefore locked himself away in his mansion. When Belle meets Mr. Prince she decides she will show him the magic her dad told her not to forget, but it isn't as easy as she thought it would be.
Aided by her new friend, Belle begins to break down Mr. Prince's wall. But, just as she is helping him find laughter again sorrow strikes too close to home and Belle herself begins to lose hope.

This is so exciting! Doesn't it sound amazing?

 .

The cover part of the cover reveal:

Here's a little something about Jack:

Jack chases Dragons on a daily basis though has yet to decide if she wishes to slay the Dragons she finds or ride them. She wishes she had a library as big as the Beast's, or Prince Adam, or whatever you wish to call him. She's working on that goal currently, at the same time searching for a house with two stories so she can slide down the banister every morning on her way to breakfast.
As a general rule, Jack doesn't write sad books, but she might have slipped in this area when she started to write about World War Two.
When she isn't writing Jack is researching, which means she is reading. And when she isn't reading, it might mean she's sleeping, but probably means she's eating. Especially if the food is cookies.
Currently Jack is trying out the life of a Dwarf, even though she's a Hobbit. She's traveling about, looking for her home, and hoping the end of her search leads her to a cave with a Dragon who needs to be battled and enough Arkenstones to fill her dream library with books.

Snippets from Oddball the Sequel

Guess what guys?

I hit 30,000 words in the first draft of the Sequel! Most of it's probably drivel.

But it's words. And they're on paper. I mean,uh, virtual paper.

I've discovered something about sequels. The sequel of a trilogy is where you let the characters get a taste of near perfection. Just so they know what it looks like. Then you snatch it away and send them spiral down to the deepest darkness and leave them there at the end.

That sounds terrible morbid. But I'm a writer. . .

Anyhow. Onward to snippets!

I drew this earlier this year. It's not particularly accurate since this scene doesn't actually happen. Oddball and Rocky don't regularly carry swords. Do they pick some up later? I don't know. . . We'll see. Just don't look at it too closely. I mostly drew it out of my bewilderment for where to start the sequel at.

“Well, if you hadn’t have scared him,” Peril said with her hands on her hips, "he wouldn’t have set fire to the place.”
“Ma’am, I assure you, the dragon was not the one who was scared." The man sounded out of breath, but still sufficiently patient especially for having to deal with Peril.

“Turkey bacon does exist,” Oddball said wildly. “Bacon is meat taken from a specific part of an animal. It doesn't have to be pork-“
“But it doesn't taste the same,” Peril said.
“Well, turkey and pork generally don’t.”
“Then why do they both bacon?” Peril crossed her arms.

“You don’t often hide under people’s tables, do you?”

“But we are all slaves to the system. The system of the world. People don’t change. And they just go about their lives hurting other people with everything they touch. How do you fight against yourself, and the whole world?”

He felt like he wanted to put his arm around her and hold her closer. He didn’t know why. But she made him feel brave.

She felt out of place. The quiet was almost overwhelming. But it wasn’t a safe kind of quiet. It was like they all waited for what was next to happen.
Like they waited for something to go wrong.

Except Oddball. His face was- intense. He wasn’t just listening like the rest of them. He seemed to listen for something specific.
What had this place done to him?

.

The kid looked up. He was a half breed. Oddball only had to see his eyes. Don’t anybody ever tell him any different. This kid was a hundred percent halfbreed, as ironic as that sounded. Oddball swallowed. The little scrap of person couldn’t be eight.

Little hands dug into his hair. “You mean, the Oddball?” It was said with awe.
“I don’t know,” Oddball said. “There’s a lot of them in the world. I’m not sure I could take credit for the being the original.”

"Listen, buddy. We’re going to make it.”
“Yeah?”
“Yeah.”

Just- golly! Watching out for all your friends’ well beings was hard work. If it wasn’t Oddball, it was the girls, and if it wasn’t them, it was Bolt. . . . or whatever kid Oddball took a liking too.

“There is nothing wrong with you.”
Oddball squinted. “You really mean that?”
“Yes.” Rocky didn’t think he could ever mean anything so strongly. “It’s everybody else who’s messed up.”
Oddball looked away. “Yeah.” He smiled. It was a shy, curious, genuine kind of smile, not that amused thing that he usually wore. “Yeah. Okay.”

“Oh,” Rocky said. “Well that sounds- dangerous. But I guess, that’s something we ought to be mildly used to by now.”
Oddball smiled. Some days Rocky drove him crazy, and other days Oddball was certain that Rocky was the best person on the planet. Today was one of the latter. “Yes, mildly.”

“I thought you were dead.”
“Thank you for your unwavering faith in me.”
“But you’ve come back. Alive.”
“Well, it’d be difficult to come back if I was dead, wouldn’t it?” He sipped his coffee.

“You brought mud and water all into my house.” Shocky stepped into the living area.  His eyes landed on the sleeping boy, then Rocky.
Rocky, of course, waved like an idiot with his mouth full of food.
“And you brought people.” Shocky glared at him. “You know how I feel about-“
“And coffee,” Oddball held up the third mug. “I brought coffee too.”
Shocky snatched the coffee and handed Oddball the empty mug he’d been holding. He took a long swallow. “Okay, you’re forgiven. Why are you here? There isn’t going to be a lynch mob banging on my door, is there?” Shocky was always one to get to the point.
“No. We just needed a place to stay.”
“Good. Because I don’t think I can handle-“ he gave Rocky and the kid an apprehensive side look- “more.”

“Have fun saving the world, kid.”

I saw Age of Ultron the other day. It was the early viewing. . . at 7p. Our town is lame and small, so nobody shows up to midnight shows. Meh. Have any of you seen it? It was amazing!

I just opted out of going to see it a second time, in order to work on Oddball. I'm trying to be dedicated *whimpers*, and strong. But it's okay, because my other brother and I will probably go and see it again anyways. :) It was so good! Go and watch it!

But I do have to share a picture.
